Sponsor: Maxwell (Jayhawker/Tmthforu created the bill):

Discussion is now open, and since this proposal was drafted by a citizen instead of a Most Serene Representative or the Midwest Governor, I invite Jayhawker to defend this bill before the Alþing.

Greetings,

In an attempt to spur activity in the legislature, I have introduced another piece of legislation that originated in my former region, the Mideast.

Simply put, plastic bags are harmful for the environment. Now, some things we use that harm the environment are unfortunately needed, such as gasoline. But with many other options available (such as reusable plastic/cloth bags), I think it's smart, environmental policy to end plastic bag use, as well as lessen the use of paper bags.

I'd be happy to answer any specific questions folks may have Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

From a principled Libertarian stand-point, I'd be against the limiting of what people can use. However, my common sense policy side definitely outweighs that. It's a small thing the Midwest can do to protect the environment. I would sign this bill, should it pass.

I tend to agree that people should be able to decide what goes in their body and such. Smiley However, I think it is important to note that here, the decision to use plastic bags (then throw them away) is harmful to the environment and our future, and could easily be avoided with realistic alternatives.

Could we give people a $10 tax rebate for purchasing cloth bags?

I'm not entirely sure why we can't just combine the first two clauses:

I'm fine with the first change, morphing the first two clauses together. I would like more debate on the tax rebate, and am hostile to that amendment.

Right, I concur with the Governor, I would like more arguments on how a tax rebate would help this bill. The bill has my support, but my personal opinion is that those incentives are more harmful than anything.

Also, I know that as the sponsor Maxwell has the right to amend the bill, but since the idea came from Jayhawker, I would like to call for a quick vote on ilikeverin's amendment (just to prevent any problems).

So... any more discussions on this? I'm not entirely sure about the tax rebate, but if no one else has something to say, we will vote on the bill as it stands now.

I'm in disagreement with the tax rebate, but I believe I'm a give and take governor, so I am approving of this bill as it stands. A vote started would be nice.

Well, since there are no more comments, I will bring this to a 24 hour vote!

Bump, this bill will fail without the necessary quorum if nobody else votes in the next two hours.

My apologies, I forgot to post the bill as it stands right now... It should look like this, right?

You have a small typo, but otherwise, it looks right.

I have some small concerns with the rebate, but otherwise, that sounds good.

And I will sign it...

Sorry, I tend to exaggerate with the speed when possible (I think that reminds me of Chris Farley impersonating Gingrich), I think votes will last 48 hours from now on...

No worries; there are just sometimes days when I can't log on and I'm upset to find a vote has been taken without me.  *hughughug*
