Northern should ancestry-wise have some German tone in it.

When I did a Minnesotan (i.e., North Central) accent for Europeans last summer, they almost universally reported that I sounded like a gay German dude.  "Northern"... does not sound "German".

I think the Northern accent is basically a Great Lakes accent (though strictly US, interestingly enough). It's very noticeable to my ears, especially those from Michigan and Wisconsin. There's a nasally aspect to it, which sounds like it turns the "con" in Wisconsin into something more like "can".

I'm not sure, however, what the real difference between Midland and Western is. Those clearly represent the General American accent today, particularly as represented on TV.

Thanks for the link. In fact, "Northern" sounds a bit "Northern German" - the typical Hannover o->a vowel shift, and the Hamburg tendency to lengthen darker vowels, and to swallow the "r" (party->Paadie). Never expected though my northern German accent showing through so strongly on my English...

Western.

Although this is a better source on North American English.

I'm often lauded by the Thais for my desirable accent and very slow, clear speech.  Admittedly I speak even slower than I did back in Missouri, but the accent was ready-made.  Thanks mom and dad, for the white-bread genes and bland, isolated, upper-middle class rearing!

It's an interesting map, although I am very suspicious of the conclusions it draws regarding the Bay Area.

78% Mid-Atlantic
You have the accent of Philadelphia, south Jersey, and Baltimore. Everyone around there knows what a Philly accent is but not enough outsiders can ever recognize it.

What American accent do you really have?
Your Result: Northeastern 91%.

Um .... no.

Some questions I couldn't really answer.  "7. Before we actually look at questions about a different vowel, how do you usually say the word "on"? Does it rhyme with "don" or with "dawn"?" Neither. Homophone with "own".

9. How do you say the vowel in the first syllable of "horrible"? Neither. Like in "hard."

Your Result: Midland

92%

(not "Midwest") The Midland is the neutral zone between the North and the South: Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri (roughly). Since it's the neutral zone, its accent is fairly neutral. And since the accent is neutral, there are millions of people with Midland accents who have never lived anywhere near the Midland (Floridians, for example). There are a lot of newscasters who talk like you.

96% North Central. Surprised how on target that was. I'm not sure why Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic can be below southern for me, I thought that would have been the most distinct accent out of them.

This is what they speak in the western half of the US, which is a pretty huge area. Like Midland, it is considered a neutral accent, so most people you meet probably think you don't have an accent (unless you're from the California coast).

Here are my results.

Dominant: Southern 85%

Some people might not like your accent but you can't deny it's taking over the country! I mean, just listen to Larry the Cable Guy, he isn't even from the South.

2. Northeastern 74%

3. Midland 64%

3. Mid-Atlantic 64%

5. Northern 59%

6. Northeast New England 51%

7. North Central 42%

8. Western 42%

Why the italics for the last one? Because that was my native accent until last year, guess that's what sticking around too long in rural Virginia does.

According to this, I have more of a Midland accent than a Southern accent.

.... What?

Southern got second place, though.

What American accent do you really have?
Your Result: Northern 92%
Your accent is Northern, which used to be the media standard in the '50s and '60s. Your accent could either be Inland Northern (Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Buffalo) or the more broadcasting-friendly Upstate NY/Western New England accent. If you have the Inland North accent, outsiders probably ask you a lot if you're from Chicago or Wisconsin.

71% Mid-Atlantic

69% Midland

63% North Central

58% Northeastern

57% Southern

42% Western

31% Northeast New England

Just for fun, obviously. I try to speak as accent-less as possible, finally having overcome (I think so at least) my typical German-speaker "th" weakness (pronouncing "think" like "sink" and so on Tongue)

I don't think I took the quiz right. Says I have a North Central/Minnesota accent. I do not.

100% Northern

I speak in a mixture of Chicago, inland Midwestern, and Wisconsin accent. The Chicago piece is most dominant, especially when I say that word, so I am told.
