POD: Following a somewhat lackluster performance in the American Revolutionary War, a peace is brokered between the 13 colonies and the British Crown that allows the United States to become independent nation in "close and friendly association" with Great Britain. King George III appoints the first Governor-General, Sir Benjamin Thompson of Massachusetts, as his representative in the United States, and the First American Parliament is elected in 1789. The Governor-General serves for life (unless he is removed by the Monarch). The GG has the authority to dissolve the Parliament of the United States, and he may also veto acts by the American Parliament.
This is a list all Governor-Generals of the United States to date.

1789-1794: Sir Benjamin Thompson [1]
[1] As the first Governor-General of the United States, Sir Benjamin Thompson set a precedent for all succeeding GGs to follow. A noted physicist, loyal Lieutenant-Colonel of the British Army, and personal friend of the King, the fact that he was American-born made him popular on both sides of the Atlantic. However, he relationship with Parliament was always rocky at best and he was harshly criticized in the Royal Courts for lack of fortitude. In 1794, he resigned his post as Governor-General to accept a position as Bavarian Army Minister. He would later be made a Count in the Holy Roman Empire.
