My mother works as some sort of hallway monitor for the local elementary school.

I haven't seen my father since 2006. He's an auto body repairman by trade. Apparently, he used to deal meth, before I was born.

Dad: Planning and Sales in a life insurance company. Basically worked with business and helped them determine what was best for their company and how best to implement it. Just retired about a week and a half ago. Worked there for 40 years and I work there now too in a different department.

Mom: Processed medical claims, lost her job about 15 years ago with offshoring and never really tried to get another one, so also "retired".

My Dad did a lot in his life, from being a musician, an artist,  a novelist (rather failed at that, trying in the same hot no AC hotel (there was no AC then) in NYC to pound one out, that Steinbeck that same summer penned Grapes of Wrath, an object lesson in whatever no doubt), an advertising exec, and then was the VP of a record company for the last 20 years of his career. My mother was a trophy wife.

Dad: Sales executive.
Mom: Middle school special ed teacher.

Like Torie, though, my parents have shifted around quite a bit.  My dad owned a pet store in the 70s before he got a job in sales in the early 80s.  He worked for the same company for about 20 years (transferring between states a couple of times) before getting his MBA and switching companies.  That's led to a sustained period of insecurity in his job prospects; he's currently unemployed for about the sixth time in the past ten years and is looking at going back into small business because ageism is kind of a thing (he's 63).  My mom was apparently in accounting before she had my older brother.  Growing up, though, she worked in a Montessori preschool for about 10 years before getting her BA and getting a job in a school district.  They moved, and she had to quit her job and work at a preschool for a couple of years, but then managed to get herself into a teaching position at a middle school.  She just finished her first year of teaching at the age of 59 Smiley

Dad: Emergency medicine doctor. Has worked on ambulances and in rural hospitals for most of his career, but actually works at an inner-city hospital nowadays. In terms of political opinions, tended to default to 'whoever's in charge now is fine' until the financial crisis, at which point he became basically a Paulist except for despising Ron Paul for vaguely specified reasons.

Mom: Computer programmer. Has skipped around and done a lot of stuff; at one point became a stay at-home parent for several years, then chose to reenter her profession during pregnancy. Still not sure how she pulled it off, especially considering the job climate at the time. Works for a non-profit which helps impoverished inner-city youth in Cleveland nowadays; apparently she has a fairly realistic chance of shifting into management over the next few years. In terms of political opinions, in spite of her unusual background basically your average Republican; she once had an unusual array of stances but has assimilated to basically toeing the party line on every issue because it's easier that way.
