As legislation in Texas moves forward to set special new restrictions and requirements on abortion, police have begun to confiscate items and search the bags of people entering the gallery to observe lawmakers.

Most of the left's outrage stems from confiscation of tampons and pads while guns are allowed if a permit exists. Thus the attention grabbing hyperbole of the thread subject. What most people fail I've heard decrying this is that Senator Kirk Watson (D) intervened to allow feminine hygiene products after the news reached him.

What do you reckon? I can understand police confiscating disruptive items, especially the less savory ones (jars of feces? Several jars of feces?) Allowing guns into the legislature is mentioned to encourage outrage, though you have to admit.. that's pretty weird.

Here's an article that is both more authoritative and also the headline fits this thread better

I read the WaPo article, but it didn't go into as much detail as I liked.

Honestly I'd be more surprised if they didn't allow guns into the Texas legislature.

it's an opinion blog entry with no original reporting so it's not authoritative just because it's at the WashPo site.

Allowing guns into a forum such as a state legislature is surprising, though less so for Texas. I'd probably favor both things--feces and guns--be confiscated on the grounds. Given the type of people likely to go to the state senate, there are probably some relatively important folks they're witnessing, and I'd assume we'd apply similar rules as those we have towards more prominent political figures when it comes to an actual established building such as the state legislature. However, I think you have a better excuse for carrying a gun around with you habitually than a jar of urine--though women's health products and whatnot less so.

I'm surprised by the votes so far. People disapprove of the police confiscating jars of poop?

Mostly approve.  The only reason to be confiscating tampons would be if they were used tampons.

No, people shouldn't be allowed to bring jars of urine into the chamber, don't be silly. The guns thing is probably a technicality in the law.

Non-issue.

How would they feel if I brought a gun that shoots tampons?

Sure. Just don't put it in a jar.

We need to develop a contraceptive gun.  You stick the barrel up in there and it destroys everything in the uterus without harming the woman.

If everyone has a gun, then others are less likely to start trouble.

If everyone has an abortion, we can bring a halt to juvenile delinquency within eighteen years.

But we need people on our planet to continue our species. We could do an even better job at keeping our species alive if those with criminal intentions were constantly faced with the possibility of their victims being armed.

Good luck getting guns from all criminals. I support background checks and felons not being allowed to own guns. They aren't idiot proof. Making it harder to have guns is like making it harder to have abortions.

Yes, I suppose it would be harder to shoot a fetus that way. I agree.
