I don't think I would've voted for him either time he ran, but he was a great man.

Well... the vast majority of them were lickspittles to the Slave Power, just for starters.

Well... the vast majority of them were lickspittles to the Slave Power, just for starters.

Because, right after Washington and before Lincoln, every single President was focused on slavery and on deciding whether they supported it or not, and not on, say, other things. John Adams' battles with the French certainly figured much less on the public consciousness than the intense slavery debate of the late 1790's. And we all know the reason for Jackson's popularity in 1828 was due in large part to having the preservation of slavery as his main--in fact most prominent--platform plank. And we all know what a pawn of the slave South that Zachary Taylor was.

EDIT: sorry if I came across as harsh or condescending. Was trying to "forcefully" communicate my own point of view on the subject.

We have the gift of hindsight, we might as well use it.  There's no law that my priorities have to line up exactly with the campaign issues of the day, either now or 200 years ago.  And, actually, I was well aware that Zachary Taylor was no friend of the Slave Power, and that absolutely is a factor in my opinion of the man.

But, also, note that I said "for starters".  JQA was miles ahead of the surrounding presidents on many other issues as well: internal improvements, promotion of science and education, humane treatment of the Indians, foreign diplomacy, the list goes on and on.

Ironically, I probably would've voted for Jackson in 1828 (not so sure about 1832), but on a personal level I like Adams A LOT better.
