I pronounce it like A.

But how about native-English folks ?

It's similar to "Maria(h)" and that is pronounced "Meh-rye-uh", no ?

Like A.  But I still say I-raq... instead of ee-rock.  But I get annoyed when northern Minnesotans say I-talian.  Yay for inconsistency!

I'm sure Verin, as a language lover, would also say YAY! for inconsistency (though he might just say yay cuz he's very happy).

So sharia rhymes with maria... but not with Mariah.

That is also how I pronounce it. However, I do not say I-raq or I-talian.

The first one.

I also so I-rak and I-tal-yun...but the "aye" sound is very soft on the second one.  Sometimes REALLY hard on the first one, but only if I'm making fun of people who say it that way.

Maria is pronounced like in Spanish. Mariah Carey's first name is pronounced the way you wrote it, but I've never seen the name Mariah anywhere else.

The few Mariahs I've known have been lower middle class whites.

I asked because of the latest NPD posters:

4: Shah-REE-ah, which almost the same as 1 except I don't mute the unstressed syllables down to schwas.

Shuh-REE-uh, sort of like how you would pronounce diarrhea.

And I say I-rack and I-talian (with a short I, not like "eye-talian.")
