News at 11: Having an advanced degree doesn't mean one is "intelligent" (however important that in and of itself is), to say nothing of things like empathy/having a legitimate social consciousness/being a good person, or being logically consistent in one's opinions.

Alternately, not having a degree certainly does not automatically make one an ignoramus.

NOTE: Really not a fan of Maher myself, just using his words as a prompt for this topic. Tongue

yes, that's an accurate label for Bill Maher.

This is a bit rich coming from someone who thinks Jenny McCarthy has brilliant insights about vaccines.

I'm a big fan of Bill Maher and watch his show religiously (ironically enough), but I don't ever recall him being in the Jenny McCarthy camp when it comes to vaccines.

Argumentum ad hominem aside (I haven't watched Maher enough to have a real opinion of him) this is a good point.

Did anyone else notice there's a rich seam of anti-intellectualism in that very statement by Maher?

George W Bush has an MBA from Harvard. That reflects rather poorly on Harvard.

Republicans hate, or at least don't care about, those who don't vote for them, so it's no surprise they hate educated people.

Not at all.  Harvard's raison d'etre is as a cog in the class-domination machine, not about 'academics'.  Giving MBAs to the empty-headed lazy scions of the ruling class is precisely the definition of success for 'educational institutions' in the capitalist system.
