I hate the term "Indian" not for PC reasons but because it's inaccurate. Indians are from India.

^^^^^^Sorry, they're "Native Americans". I am "Indian"

Those from Indiana may prefer being called Native Americans (ironically), but those from Virginia tribes call themselves "Virginia Indians."

Well not just from India,  just as Asians aren't just from the Middle East.  Even in the Columbus' day the Indies covered not just modern South Asia, but also Southeast Asia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Broadly speaking in the context of 1492, the Indies (soon to be the East Indies) were all the lands in which the Brahmic scripts were/are used for writing.
