Here is my driving bill:

Learners must hold their permit for minimum of 9 months.
Minimum of 45 hours behind the wheel before testing.
Minimum of 15 hours of driving at night before testing.
Minors may not transport more than one minor passenger for the first 6 months of being licensed.
Minors may not transport more than three passengers at any time until age 18.
Minors subject to curfew from midnight until 4:00a.m.
Minors may apply for a learner's permit at 15 years, 9 months.
Drivers must have their license renewed every 8 years.
Drivers must pass the driver's test every 8 years in order to weed out bad elderly drivers.
All vehicles must hold a breathalyzer prior to being able to start the ignition to cut back on DUI's.

Minimum of 20-25, maximum of 70-75.

My hope is that within half a century years we'll look back at an age in which virtually ever adult was not only permitted to drive, but expected to do so as a matter of daily routine, with a mix of horror and bewilderment.

We don't have self driving cars yet so unfortunately we need to allow human drivers.

I'd go with 14. Right when you start needing it to hang with your buds and do illicit substances.

Eh, in a few years we'll have driverless cars and driving will become a niche hobby like horseback riding.

More on this: Do you have any idea what a 17 year-old has to do? He may be called to help transport some of his mates down to the Crofoot to play a gig! Or maybe they gotta go on a kayaking expedition! Anything can happen! It's like ancient Rome!

Yeah, these laws aren’t enforced at all. I got my  license in September 2012, and under Indiana law you can’t have anyone outside your immediate family in the car with you for 6 months after you first get your license. So while I was only *legally* allowed to drive people in March, I actually started driving people 3 days after. Virtually every single school day, and plenty on weekends.

Not one person I know follows that law. Not. One. Person.

It's pretty simple. In a lot of states it's illegal to not wear a seat belt, but you'll only get a citation for it if you're pulled over for something else. Like right now cops wouldn't be pulling over every car with multiple people.

No you would have to be pulled over for something else in order to get a citation for it. It's a law you can't be out to enforce unless something else is done to warrant being pulled over.

Fun fact: Perhaps you don't know this from your urban liberal elitist bubble, but not everyone lives in a city or within walking distance of a public transit area. If you expect all these people to bike wherever they go you should be placed in an asylum.

I suppose 16 will have to do at the moment for logistical reasons, but I really think it should be 18. Insurance goes down at 18 for a reason; kids are less likely to get in accidents by that point.

Our current minimums are okay, I think. Faced with either raising or lowering the ages slightly I'd lower them. 20-25 is entirely batty.

E: I take that back, our state laws are hilarious. Totally forgot about that sticker scam. 15 or 16 sounds good to me.

Having people retest every 8 years would weed out reckless old drivers without having to discriminate based on age.

So... if you think that we should be a slave to our current problems, and not try to make a better world, however slowly and incrementally that would take, why do you even care about politics?

Also, fun fact: I grew up in the suburbs.  And Averroes lives upstate, in what I'm sure is not a transit-rich area.  And there are many others like him, who do not live in a major city but would like to break free from auto dependence all the same.  And the vast majority of transit riders are poors, so branding our position as "elitist" is, while good politics for a Republican I'm sure, frankly kind of insane.

Rural public transport is something that really needs to be improved; it's expensive, but that shouldn't deter from its obvious objective correctness.

And there's no excuse for suburbs (however defined) to have poor public transport. None whatsoever.
