I don't "take sides" in conflicts like this, though I admit I tend to have more sympathy for the nationalists.

There's only one right answer for an American who's ~1/6 Irish, and that choice is obvious.

The side of the people that just want to live their lives and not be defined by their community, be able to live in any area, walk down any street and want Northern Irish politicians to be concerned with the economy, jobs and healthcare rather than factionalist matters.

This, but if I had to choose, whatever the majority of the Northern Irish support, which is unionist.

If there weren't factional matters, there'd be no politics. You wanna make every government worker unemployed!?

Nationalist/Republican, though I do not care about factional loyalties or the question of independence so much as an end to monarchy.

Americans should be banned from discussing Northern Ireland unless they've passed some kind of exam about recent developments.

To make a very important fact very, very clear:

The civil war is over you fycking idiots.

There are no 'sides'. If that was ever how things worked there (and it wasn't really) it certainly isn't now.

The Ulster Protestants (of all shades) have been there for far longer than most white American families have been in the U.S.

My last major English paper was about a conflict in the world. I chose Northern Ireland. I started off trying to prove my point that the British were the oppressors in NI, but as I actually learned about the conflict, it became clear that NI is and always will be British.
