We shouldn't attend the Olympics if they're taking place in a country that doesn't have free elections. That applied to China in 2008, and it will almost certainly apply to Russia in 2016.

I'm inclined to see the Olympics as a gigantic waste of money and a playground for the global 1%, anyway. I wouldn't mind if the US government cut all funds to the Olympic Committee and refused to get involved at all.
