How dare Pat McCrory try to hide behind things like empirical evidence as he seeks to redistribute money from hard-working 'mericans to lazy moochers. We might as well change North Carolina's name to North Korea!

Someone primary this man in 2016!!!

he's an FF on this, but it's worth noting that saying that the lower drug rate among recipients could be evidence that it was working rather than that it wasn't needed. without setting up a control group (which would be difficult, and probably unethical) - there's no way to know.

Great, so now people on welfare can smoke weed all day when they're not allowed to vote.

He also vetoed a bill expanding exemptions to e-verify.

I wish he would have line-itemed the abortion legislation on process grounds.

Creating an economic environment where people don't need to be on government assistance is more important I think.

Time to ignore these emotionally-driven issues and put our attention to what's actually bringing us down (debt, inflation, and spending).

It's a great way to encourage welfare-to-drug-dealing career moves.

By the standards of today's GOP leadership, yes, she is, just like almost any other Republican outside of Congress.

The evidence is that welfare recipients are far less likely to use illegal drugs. The stuff is expensive.

Calling today's GOP leadership (or supporters) "Republicans" is an insult to what Republicans really are.

He criticized the process under which it was being considered and then signed the legislation anyway. It is not like the legislature is going to have any less of a majority in the short session later this year or next year to do it through more acceptable means anyway.

Time to cut to the chase folks. Isn't the real reason McCrory vetoed the bill the below right from the article itself, and it's a damn good reason (I highlighted on bold the coup de grace as it were), no matter what your ideological perspective?  Dumb bills should be vetoed - period. (And oh, were they going to test for pot as a "drug?" That would make a lot of sense, not. In fact, it would make zero sense.)

"A similar welfare drug testing law enacted by Florida in 2011 wound up costing the state tens of thousands of dollars over a period of months before federal judges found it unconstitutional. The short-lived testing revealed a lower rate of drug use among welfare applicants than among the general population."

Legislators are moving to override this. The votes seem to be there, as the bill actually had bipartisan support, passing 42-4 in the Senate and 91-21 in the House.

Glad to see him finally do something good.

I don't know why Dems would support this, but hopefully the veto will convince Dems and moderate less crazy Repubs.

McCrory is calling a special session starting the first week of September.

If I didn't know better, I'd say it's a pretty good deal for him; the Assembly overrides his vetoes so he gets to look independent.
