Regardless if Bush wins or loses in 2004 a new Republican canidate for 2008 will be needed. Who is it, who are they and why?

I like Jeb Bush, but it may be too soon to start a Dynasty.   I also like former Congressman J.C. Watts and my own Senator, Dr. Frist

If Bush loses, look for Mitt Romney, Pataki or another moderate Republican from a Democratic state. If Bush wins his heir will be one of his advisers or Giuliani. Look for Rumsfeld. His advisers can not win in the general election.

Bill Owens, I think, would be a good bet.  I have been planning to post a detailed 2008 senerio for sometime.  I'll get around to it eventually.

On a side note:  I saw part of the Specter/Toomey debate on C-span.  I know that Specter has all of the advantages, but Toomey came across as the better candidate.

I like Rummy, but he doesn't stand a chance.  Too old and too many people hate him.

There's a thread for that in the congressional elections section.

I think a 2008 race for the nomination will look like this:

Bill Owens
Chuck Hagel
Bill Frist
Elizabeth Dole
Rudy Giuliani
Dan Quayle

Dan Quayle!  LOL!  The media would have a ball with him if he sticks his head up again.

Of the rest of that list, my guess is the right would rally around a conservative (Frist or Owens) and the moderate around another moderate (Hagel or Giuliani).  In the end, the right controls the GOP primaries (just liek the left controls the Dem primaries) and either Frist or Owens wins the nomination.

well he's probably got about as much chance as Pataki or Guiliani. Both are way too liberal to win nationwide.

I'm guessing Frist, Owens or Hagel.

We can only hope for Roy Moore though.

Likely:
Bill Frist (likelier running mate IMHO, but still a rising star)
Jeb Bush (even moreso if GWB loses in 2004)
Rudolph Giuliani

Possible:
Lamar Alexander
Elizabeth Dole
Chuck Hagel (possibly my favourite Republican)
John McCain (the whole Kerry VP saga doesn't reflect well on him though)
Bill Owens
George Pataki
Rick Santorum

If GWB wins this year then I can see a Giuliani/Frist ticket for 2008. I used to think McCain was the likelier option, but I doubt the GOP base will ever forgive him for all that speculation over Kerry.

Of course there are issues over whether Giuliani is too moderate for the religious right, if he's gonna be able to take on Hillary for the senate in 2006, etc etc, but it's just a gut feeling I have.

How about Huckabee/Moore vs Sharpton/Kucinich? I'd pay to see that.

If Kerry wins and does an acceptable job among Repulicans, McCain might win. Hagel's problem is his election company connections. If Bush loses, his advisers will be seen as fools among Republican circuits. Expect a governor or senator to get the nomination.

To everyone saying Giuliani, do you honestly think the Republicans would nominate someone who opposes the late term abortion ban? Not to mention is pro-civil unions and strong gun control.

No.  the right controls the primary.  Look at what they did to McCain, they will do it to Rudy.

exactly. Rudy has NO CHANCE. Pat Robertson would never endorse a pro-choice candidate, and that's why Rudy would get nowhere.

I wouldn't go that far...for example, if Kerry was pretty popular, and the GOP had to go moderate to win, I could see them turning to Rudy over Hagel or McCain or Alexander.

Funny how all my leftist friends were calling Giuliani a jackboot-wearing fascist and everything else, back in the 90s.  Now they all call him a 'moderate'
