Australia has elections coming up and uses a "party preference" system to help determine the Parliamentary results, quite similar to Instant Runoff voting a person votes for the candidate/party of their choice, and if that candidate does not garner enough votes their votes are then apportioned to another candidate, based off the "preferences" submitted by that candidates party.

This has come into the news a bit recently with the news that the "Wikileaks party" preferenced some right wing parties over the left wing Greens.  Meaning that those right wing parties would get votes and a chance at seats before the left wing ones do. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/aug/18/rightwing-parties-wikileaks-preferences

This system also means Australia has a ton of small political parties that jockey for power, and a lot of dealmaking is done..

With that in mind, going by the list of Aussie political parties here  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_political_parties_in_Australia

What would be your preferences 1-5 (preference number 1 being the party your actual vote would most likely go to and then on down).

Mine are

1: Australian Greens
2: Australian Labor
3: Australian First Nations Party
4: Pirate Party Australia
5: Australian Sex Party

Either Greens, or Sex Party 1st and then Greens. Not sure if I'd even bother to pref Labor above the Coalition at this point. I think I would have reluctantly if Gillard was still leader but with Rudd, I don't think I care

You have to preference every party or your vote doesn't count.

Interesting. Didn't know that. Seems like a strange system but I guess it's part of the idea of compulsory voting.

1. Greens
2. Sex
3. ALP (2nd if the electoral system didn't let me to chose 3 parties or more. I'm not crazy enough to waste my vote and make a conservative win easier)

It would entirely depend on the seat I would vote it.
But, assuming that the Labor candidate is not a complete social liberal, then along these lines:

1) Democratic Labor Party
2) Katter's Australian Party
3) Australian Labor Party
4) National Party

I would probably try to preference minor parties ahead of major ones, just as a matter of principle. Though I'd try to make sure the important parties were in the right order. Through a brief list together:

1. Shooters & Fishers
2. Sex Party
3. Wikileaks
4. Palmer United
5. Democrats
6. Coalition
7. Greens
8. Katter's Australian
9. Democratic Labor
10. Labor
11. Family First
12. Christian Democrats
13. One Nation

Random electorate: Bennelong.

1. PETERS, Lindsay    The Greens
2. LI, Jason Yat-Sen    Labor
7. WORSLEY, Julie   Christian Democratic Party (Fred Nile Group)
4. MARKS, Robert James   Palmer United Party
5. McCAFFREY, Lachlan Patrick    Democratic Labour Party (DLP)
6. ALEXANDER, John    Liberal
3. AUGUST, John   Secular Party of Australia
8. WATERSON, Victor   Australia First Party

I might exchange second and third preferences (or 4th and 5th), but I think this my more likely order.
