Could a running mate from a big battleground state have made a difference in where Dukakis could campaign in due to an electoral change? I still think Dukakis was uniquely bad as a candidate.

Why would George Deukmejian, a reasonably conservative Republican, agree to join a ticket with Dukakis against a popular incumbent VP from a popular administration? And why would he be picked in the first place?
