I would certainly do so, but only after he serves his time.

The same applies to Edward Snowden if and when he is ever apprehended by federal agents.

Yes, immediately. He has already been imprisoned for the past three years, during which time he has suffered breaches of the 8th amendment.

He'll probably be paroled in ten years or so, which would be an appropriate punishment. At the end of the day, things like this need to be illegal, or else the country can't really function at all.

if you feel invested in the power system, that leeches off us all, feel invested in its fuctioning, that is.  Tolstoy said, in The Law of Love/Law of Violence, if you all want to put all these young males into militaries, and arm them, and have them kill people, and treat the wounded, and all of it, go do it yourself, don't drag me into it.  that's how I feel -- that's why I say, there is no national interest.  when the US murders Pakistani and Yemeni kids that doesn't represent me, that's not in my interest, that's not my country.  nothing about the US foreign policy occurs with my consent beyond my implicit consent of paying taxes, (which I don't because I earn almost no money), and so it goes.  I'm not invested in the whole game.  nobody who is acting on my behalf was exposed by Bradley Manning.  so God Bless him.  if Lief feels otherwise, that's his deal, his responsibility to justify it.

Immediately. Manning's a true FF. Murder (even if 'collateral') and torture should not be tolerated in any civilized country. His refusal to abandon his moral conscience in the face of deeply disturbing information means he's a hero.

I couldn't have said it better, and certainly not as succinctly!

Yes, for humanitarian reasons and that's the US government should do if still has some rest of decency. As others have said, torture neither is admissible nor is constitutional.

I strongly doubt it, but I have not followed this case that closely.

Yes, but at a later date.  I'd pardon him after a year or two in prison.  The idea is to make such actions meaningful.. if you're gonna leak your nation's secrets, be prepared to give up 3-4 years of your life for it.

But not so excessive as to be absolutely ridiculous....

So do you support letting anyone who has been put in solitary out of prison? just because its humanitarian? because he faced nothing different than many others have.

Of course im not really in favor of the solitary system, but just because its wrong doesn't mean anyone who has been put there should be let out of prison totally.

No, but I would support a commutation, ideally to time served (particularly on account of torturous treatment).

"Solitary system" is a nice euphemism for torture. Nobody deserves to stay in an animal cage (8 square feet or 2.43 square meters) 23 hours a day, forced to sleep naked and other brutalities which have had enough diffusion. Even the most sane person would have thoughts of suicide in these circumstances but, perversely enough, the risk of suicide was used as the excuse to humiliate the prisoner even more. That confinement was previous to the trial, so the prisoner wasn't officially a traitor. It's not humanitarian at all and is a shame for any civilized country. Manning should be released, yes.

Well it is a system a system of torture and lets be frank any form of imprisonment is torture, even if SHU is much more so.  But you failed to answer the question posed, should prisoners subjected to solitary torture, be released because it is inhumane to do? or just manning because he is special.
