Didn't Ose himself lose a bid in 2008?

Likely D. Emken is not a great candidate, Birman is essentially a Some Dude. Ose is interesting, and is probably the frontrunner for the nomination if he runs, but I can't see him beating Bera.

Safe D... Ose is a decent candidate, but he too would lose by 7-10 points.

This was a 51-49 victory in 2012. Obviously Republicans won't have a candidate of Lungren's caliber, but then Democrats won't have turnout of 2012's caliber. Neither Birman, nor Emken, nor Ose are some dudes. The race is still forming; I'd say it's Leans D at best for Democrats, if not Tossup outright.

Lungren had caliber?

Seems like it was a constantly declining ability.

That said he was a seasoned campaigner to be sure and his conservative credentials were hardly anything to sneeze at, and therefore I would much rather have him still present on the hill, along with Mary Bono Mack, and Brian Bilbray.

He was a former statewide official, which is a pretty big deal in an enormous state like California, and he was apparently a darkhorse VP possibility in 1996. In the 1990s he was quite a big deal.

Seems like it was a constantly declining ability.

He never really recovered from the shellacking he got when he tried to run for Governor in 1998.

Ami Bera seems to be a lot better of a campaigner than people give him credit for; I think he'll be fine against any of the Rs.

This.

Ose is the only one who even has a shot, and Bera would still be the clear favorite (and that's ignoring the fact that Ose will have a hard enough time simply making it to the general election).

Despite more competition on the R side, Cook downgraded this from Lean D to Tossup.

Igor Birman gets a boost on the R side with the Madison Project's backing.
