I am surprised this wasn't mentioned earlier. Howard Philips was a major figure in the 1970s and 1980s conservative movement, and founded the Constitution Party in 1992. In 2008, he made an impassioned speech against Alan Keyes attempts to hijack the party.

Very, very belated, but RIP. I was quite shocked to hear this.

He ran as a Democrat for U.S. Senate in the 1970 in Massachusetts. I find that a bit odd.

I am not a fan of his political views (not anymore at least). But I would have thought that his general role in the conservative movement was fairly important, though he ended his career on a low note as the founder and perennial candidate behind a minor party.
