I'm talking about boots on the ground here. A total war.

I lean towards yes, but I thought the same about Libya. Of course, Syria is much denser in terms of population, and only a full scale invasion will achieve the results that Obama is aiming for. Already Syrian tanks are being hidden in preparation for the airstrikes, so once the airstrikes start, the military will push for further intervention into Syria.

I'm also thinking we will end up invading (and probably well before the deadline I put up). After the airstrikes, things are going to go downhill fast.

Most likely not. We don't know though, Obama could be entirely hypocritical (once again) and turn this civil war into Bush-style intervention.

I would assume that even Obama isn't that stupid.

Not if the current status quo (basically stalemated multiple-front civil war between Assad and rebels who are mostly AQ-associated, but allied with some liberal and some Kurdish nationalist groups for convenience) is maintained. Which seems likely regardless of whether Obama orders a short and sharp bombing campaign or not.

Undoubtedly. The real question is as to whether or not it will go down in recorded "official" history. We've probably pulled operations like it in about every single country around the globe.

It could boost his numbers so he thinks it's worth a shot by then.

No.  Frankly this debate is rather amazing.  This suspicion that Obama was going to make it a ground war didn't exist back when this happened in Libya.

Perhaps that's because Syria is not Libya?

No. President Obama has shown that he understands the dangers of a prolonged process of nation building with American troops shouldering the heavy lifting. That is why he uses the drone program so extensively and bombed Libya. Nothing will occur in Syria outside of bombings.

Of course not. ITT: people who don't really know anything about Obama or his foreign policy thinking.

Hey, I hope you guys are right. I really do.

I don't think Obama even wants to bomb the country but he unfortunately continues to box himself in with some bad choices. We'll see what happens.

I highly doubt there's going to be any, even limited, ground invasion.
