1800. A weary Jefferson, tired of eight years of heading the new nation, nonetheless does not decline attempts by his party to nominate him. However, should the movement for a third Jefferson term succeed, he will not be happy. "Jay, for all his humiliations, has proved the luckiest of the two of us since 1792." Since 1798, America has been embroiled in a "Quasi-War" with Great Britain, and trade has suffered much to the chagrin of New England Federalists. Meanwhile, the alliance with Lafayette's France has strengthened, but at little benefit to either party.  Along with Jefferson, a number of would-be Vice Presidents are in the running. Despite losing re-election in 1796, Aaron Burr has surpassed George Clinton as the party's leader in New York. George Clinton, himself having re-captured the Governorship in 1798, is running as well. Some, tired of the influence of New York, are pushing for Albert Gallatin, John Langdon, the resolutely retired Samuel Adams, and even Secretary of State James Madison for alternatives.

The Federalists, having made gains in the 1798 and 1799 mid-term elections, are hoping to launch a comeback. While Vice President Jay as well is unhappy about the potential for another race, he has resolved that, should the Federalists call on him, he will answer. Among other contenders are, naturally, Alexander Hamilton and the sickly Oliver Ellsworth, the second and third candidates of the Federalists in 1796. Naturally, there are still supporters of former Vice President Adams in the party. Lastly among the field are Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, supported by Southern Federalists, and New York Senator Rufus King.

Two choices, three days. Etc.
