In 1868, President Andrew Johnson, who succeeded the presidency in April 1865 after President Lincoln was shot, is nominated by the Democrats and faces Gen. Ulysses Grant in the general election. How is it turning out?

Grants victory in 1868 was not a landslide (as in 1872), so Andy Johnson could have done better than democartic nominee Horatio Seymour. He was the incumbent and popular in the south.

It's imporant to note, that Seymour won the important state of New York by a close margin.

Johnson would just get bent over a barrel by Grant. No contest, Grant takes Seymour's Northern states in all likelihood.

Both prez were disappointments. Chase fully extended the right to vote to black males living in south. Morrison Waite set originally friendly to blacks started Jim Crow by not protecting blacks from lynch mobs.

Gen. Ulysses S. Grant (R-IL)/ Rep. Schuyler Colfax Jr (R-IN)  197   52%

Pres. Andrew Johnson (D-TN) / Fmr. Gov. Joel Parker (D-NJ)   97   48%

Johnson is able to win just slightly in AL, NC, AR and his home TN in spite of the Reconstruction vote disenfranchisement of former Confederates.  He does better than Seymour in the West, but not quite as well in the Northeast.  Joel Parker as VP keeps NJ in his column, which picking Seymour for VP would not do for NY.  That's about as good as it gets for Johnson.
