Was initially going to vote no as it feels like a 'get out of jail free' card for Assad, then I thought 'any resolution is better than no resolution', so Present.

I think I could support it, sure, assuming the actual details bared out with this brainstormed proposal. It forces Syria to respond to a diplomatic effort, or else, and gives the Administration a deadline for submitting a clear plan of action to congress in that time as well as asks for a second try at patching together an international coalition. It resolves some of my largest concerns, keeps congress at the forefront, and isn't a thoughtless rush to action. It's not bad.

Does Congress get to vote again, on the Administration's yet to be fashioned "plan of action?" And if so, why not wait for the plan, and let the Administration do its thing in the interim?  If there is no second vote, then what is the point of the plan? Does it really matter what it says?  Meanwhile, Obama is going to give a speech on Tuesday. It will be interesting to see how detailed he gets.

It was the same problem in Britain. There was a vote with the idea of another vote later, with the first vote more about process, and a feel good condemnation. If that is the deal, then just vote no. This half pregnant routine makes no sense to me.

Nay (D)

Does anyone legitimately believe the Assad regime will sign a treaty just because America threatened them? This just sounds like saying "okay we're gonna use military force, but at least we warned them first"

Nay (D) We can't afford a war on multiple levels... it's not worth it to even pass a resolution.

No. This makes no sense.  You can't say "sign this treaty or else" and then expect that the treaty signed will be followed. It's hard enough to get countries to follow treaties they've entered into willingly.

I'm split on this.  I understand the rationale and I like the intentions behind it, but if Assad already used chemical weapons, there isn't much point in saying "Well, don't do it again."  It would probably make more sense to either intervene now or not intervene at all, rather than half-ass it and try to please everybody.  Right now, I'm a Present vote (D).

Nay (D)

This is a massive gimmick. I would not vote for any resolution that seeks to aid or abet any of the forces slugging it out in Syria with American firepower.

We shouldn't be aiding or abetting anyone in Syria. More reason to destroy those chemical weapons. Present (D).

I'd vote no.  I don't think Heitkamp or Manchin are trying to pull the wool over our eyes on this or anything... I think they are really trying to allow a diplomatic solution with military intervention to back it up.

I mean... if this passed, it would put Russia in a bind and might force their hand.

But I really think it's time for Americans to just say no.  Not for their sake... but for ours.

Why would we tell someone they have 45 days or we're giving them 45 days? This is stupid. They'll just wait us out and use chemical weapons the next day.

This is the foreign policy equivalent of an upscale white person attempting to discipline their child.

"I'm going to count to three...One...Two...Three..."

"...okay, I'm going to count to five...One...Two...Three...Four..."

"...Four and a Half..."

Standing in the corner for a full hour with your nose touching the wall is probably the most effective punishment for an unruly kid.

Every time your nose leaves the wall, it's 10 more minutes.

Obama should either do something or not do something, but talking about it without action is making us look weak. This is what we warned about in 2008. He only gives speeches with no action or follow up. Obama is an empty suit with no depth or experience.

It's obviously preferable to what's being proposed now but I would still have to vote against it.

The media and Obama didnt edit and twist his words. His twisted brain edited smart things to make them appeal to the crazy Republican base.
