Holy crap these people are dumb. The whole point of that human shield strategy is to stop any war from happening in an area. Doesn't quite work so well when there's a civil war and one side or the other (or both, if you mouth off to the dictatorial side about human rights), will happily shoot you on the way to shooting the regime loyalists.

The reason it had a (slim) chance of working in Baghdad (though it didn't in the end) was because there wasn't any existing war in that country before the US waged war.

This. Plus what are the odds Assad just has them shot and then blames the rebels? Considering how many useful idiots of this type would actually believe his propaganda outlets' claims in that event (like see JCL's post about the gas attack), probably quite high.
