What will he say tonight? Will he still bother to advocate for a military strike? It seems that the Russian proposal has altered the entire equation.

He'll talk tough, threaten Syria if they don't comply with whatever agreements they enter into, and talk about the egregious things they've done.

Watch baseball or MNF re-runs instead.

He will say that he will give the Russian proposal a chance to give peace a chance, because he's peaceful.

I think it will be something about how we still need the resolution to pass so we will have leverage in negotiations with Syria and Russia. Think "diplomacy with teeth".

It's a strange time to talk of war.

This whole Syria thing has really soured my opinion of Obama.

It's soured my opinion of the left. It was mostly the left (and John McCain) pressuring Obama to start aiding the rebels during 2012, but the White House was making then the same arguments against getting involved that pols who oppose the resolution are now using. Sorry but I believe in loyalty, and Obama has not lost mine just yet.

I'd love to hear your opinion of George W. Bush, or what you think President Romney would've done over the past 8 months.

I have to say that this was a pretty inconsequential speech.

I have to say that this was a pretty inconsequential speech.

He clearly laid out the case as to how we know the regime was behind the attack, but this was not controversial for the vast majority of Americans.  He vividly reminded us how awful it is, and why we should care - and if it makes more people care about Syria it is a good thing, but the proposal to attack makes no more sense after the speech than it did before.

I didn't watch.  Did he thank Putin for ending this drama for now?

Obama announced he was requesting a delay of a vote he was sure to lose. It was unclear whether the delay is until he can win the vote for his Goldilocks initiative, designed to change nothing except the use of chems to kill innocent civilians as opposed to conventional weapons, or until the Russian initiative dies because the quid pro quo that Putin suddenly added as a codicil is to hand Syria over to Russia as it were, protecting its client tyrant, Assad. It was perhaps the most bizarre full dress, prime time on all the networks POTUS speech in my memory. It might have been more interesting if he chatted about his golf handicap for 20 minutes.

Yeah, by what's turning out to be a pretty inconsequential President.

Anyway, at least it looks for now like it's not going to happen - that's a win although as ugly as wins come.

What do you think I am going to say about Bush or Romney? Bush was controlled by Cheney (who even outranks Nixon in terms of vileness) for most of his presidency, and Romney would have only do what is most profitable for his own pockets. And Obama is just as bad as they are.
