I'm not going to outline and paraphrase sometimes sophisticated and rich arguments for you which are readily available for research if you're interested.  dismissing Jesus and Tolstoy as 'weirdos willing to say just about anything' does not do them justice.

Any reasonable person can think of a situation where it's morally just to use violence or kill someone.  Every society and practiced system of ethics has acknowledged that.  If someone disagrees with that premise, I think they're a wacko.

The only question is what are good reasons to kill someone? Enthusiastic death penalty (much like people who are obsessed with guns (I once was and then I almost had an accident but I still think the Colorado laws were bad, just not enough to recall people)) supporters are probably HP, those who are like "well, its a good idea, but it should be harder to do" are pretty reasonable.

I oppose the death penalty with the exception of the liquidation of the ruling class that will occur after the revolution.

Oftentimes I get the sense that there's a rather...sadistic side to some of them.

Far more, though, fall into the camp of making those who receive the death penalty an "Other" (dehumanization) so as to absolve themselves of any social responsibility for the horrible crimes that those who receive capital punishment commit.

I'm opposed to the death penalty, but people have the right to support it. Bobby Jindal, George W. Bush, and Rick Perry are very strong advocates of it and I don't think any less of them for it. However, it should be in the name of justice and not revenge.

While I oppose the death penalty, it depends on the type of person we're talking about. If we're talking about Texas-style "fry 'em all" types, I vote HP. The worst of the worst are those that advocate for the death penalty and argue that killing innocents is worth the cost (GWB and Ricky Perry come to mind, even if they never explicitly said that). I think Justice Scalia also said something to that effect once, which is odd for someone that regularly looks to Blackstone (of "It is better that ten guilty persons escape than that one innocent suffer" fame).
