It's interesting that despite all the Republicans claiming that they are the civil rights party (as Oldiesfreak tends to repeat ad nauseum), one of their rising stars is hailing the legacy of a politician most known for his racism. Pretty disgusting to make a hero out of a man like that.

I read this expecting Cruz to say something like "Helms was a great Senator if you ignore all the racial hatred" or something like that. Nothing that would be out of the ordinary for a speech for the Heritage Foundation.


Instead he literally says Helms was awesome because he was willing to say crazy bullsh*t, and implies that he is a modern Helms because he is also willing to say crazy bullsh*t.

Truly Ted Cruz is the innovative mind of a party moving into the future.

This is why I think the GOP is in danger of dying.  There has been hyperbole about the Democrats dying before, but it was never met with rising stars saying we needed to restore Tammany Hall--the equivalent of these kind of statements.  Things need to change.

He's probably just referring to the prestige that senators like Jesse Helms had.  Regardless of his views on race, Helms was a widely respected figure in the Senate.
