Ted Cruz praises his political idol Jesse Helms in a speech at the Heritage Foundation, saying that the Senate needs "A Hundred more like Jesse Helms":
http://www.mediaite.com/online/sen-ted-cruz-we-need-a-hundred-more-like-jesse-helms-in-senate/

It's interesting that despite all the Republicans claiming that they are the civil rights party (as Oldiesfreak tends to repeat ad nauseum), one of their rising stars is hailing the legacy of a politician most known for his racism. Pretty disgusting to make a hero out of a man like that.

I read this expecting Cruz to say something like "Helms was a great Senator if you ignore all the racial hatred" or something like that. Nothing that would be out of the ordinary for a speech for the Heritage Foundation.

Instead he literally says Helms was awesome because he was willing to say crazy bullsh*t, and implies that he is a modern Helms because he is also willing to say crazy bullsh*t.

All senators should be apologists for apartheid South Africa, hasten the death of hundreds of thousands of AIDS victims by refusing to fund research and treatment, and derail the nomination of a member of his own party to a prominent ambassadorship because they disagree on abortion rights?

For real. I wish she either stayed in the Senate or got Dewhurst (even if he is a slimeball) to win.

Truly Ted Cruz is the innovative mind of a party moving into the future.

This is why I think the GOP is in danger of dying.  There has been hyperbole about the Democrats dying before, but it was never met with rising stars saying we needed to restore Tammany Hall--the equivalent of these kind of statements.  Things need to change.

Republicans are indifferent to actual racism at best (not fake accusations of "reverse racism"), contemptuous of the "Other" in word and deed in general, and this is fundamental to understanding the modern GOP.

Ted Cuz should have followed the example of Trent Lott and praised Strom Thurmond.  After all it would help him with the primary voters here.

Things are different now. They - and even the Negroes - can get admitted, but only on certain conditions.

Which is why Cruz is trying so hard.

He's probably just referring to the prestige that senators like Jesse Helms had.  Regardless of his views on race, Helms was a widely respected figure in the Senate.

FTR: When Chris Dodd said that Robert Byrd would have made a "great senator at any time in history," nobody seemed to bother pointing out Byrd's racism and KKK ties, so this is yet another example of the double standard that the liberal media uses on racial issues.

Maybe in the D.C. area. All those douchebags care about is "seniority" and "legacy". Anyone with any real mind knows Jesse Helms was a jackass of epic proportions.

I agree, but there's no doubt Helms left a legacy during his tenure.

On a personal level, Helms was really respected and a nice senators. He represents a time when senators actually hung out together and were friendly. People who've worked on the Hill for decades will say as much.

Granted, he was insane.

I think Carol Mosley Braun would disagree.

So a Democrat, who spent decades renouncing and apologizing for his past deeds is always going to be just a racist, while a Republican, using racism during his entire career, never reflecting on this, wasn't all that bad?

How very principled.

Helms was "bitterly opposed to federal financing of AIDS research and treatment", which he believed was God's punishment for homosexuals.

Yeah, he was a real sweetie.

Your wang gets smaller when you remind someone that Robert Byrd was an HP until a few years before his death?
