The Election of 1800 proved to be the most divisive, contentious, and vicious political race of the new country's history since its revolution. While it seemed the Federalists finally had the electoral power to take down Jefferson, vote-splitting between Hamilton, Adams, and King left their foremost candidate, the junior Senator from New York with the exact same amount of electoral votes as the embattled President Jefferson. With that, the election is sent to the House of Representatives where they must decide between Jefferson and Hamilton.

One choice, three days.

I guess this is over and I guess that President Jefferson has been re-elected.

The 1800 House Election
Thanks to Republican strength in the House and their control of lesser populated states, Jefferson was able to win re-election to a third term.

President Thomas Jefferson (Republican-Virginia) 9 states
Senator Alexander Hamilton (Federalist-New York) 7 states
