My mom had been hospitalized for 3 weeks, including over a week in the ICU because she became septic (had an infection in her blood). She spent a week under sedation with a breathing tube.
She has since recovered quite well and is in very good spirits, although understandably weak. Her doctor wanted her to spend a couple weeks in a nursing facility to get some physical therapy and really get her ready to come home... but with my mom's medical history and all the time spent in nursing homes, she couldn't do it.. especially since this facility was 35 miles away and didn't have access to doctors all the time.
She ended up with a UTI (bladder infection), so went back to the hospital today because otherwise she'd have to wait until Wednesday to see the doctor in the nursing home.
She decided she wasn't going back to the nursing home and was going to come home. This was at 7pm this evening. She's the type that once on a mission, she will exhaust literally every single possible option before conceding defeat. It's probably that stubbornness that keeps saving her. I'm surprised she didn't call the mayor and ask for a ride home.
I got the old van ready that she can transfer into more easily, called her PCA, got the house tidied up... and we went to pick her up. Got her prescription of antibiotics from the nifty auto-prescription machine in the ER and got her half way home, when the engine began to overheat. Before I could pull over it was steaming and billowing smoke and you could hear the coolant boiling.
So my step dad had to drive his car down and we had to transfer her there. Because she is basically immobile, this is quite a feat. Ideally she would've come home in a medi-van where she can sit in her wheel chair for the whole trip... but Sunday night, and again, she wasn't going back to that nursing home.
We finally got her home, ordered some food for her, and things are finally calmed down again...
but I needed to vent a bit. Now we have to get the radiator fixed in the van and have it towed... and our well pump is acting up and will probably need to be replaced at a hefty cost... when it rains, it pours.. misery loves company, etc etc.
Just please keep her in your thoughts.
