I didn't even see Re8 until I actually played it (that is to say, the fact that I could just play it with no heavy pieces exchanged before. I was quite relying on the rook's control of the file before that move of course.) Hence the need for all those little queenie steps.

But Black returns the favor.  He had the chance to extend his material lead to two whole pieces with the simple 8...Bxd2+ 9. Qxd2 Nb4 10. O-O (either Knight is immune from capture because both advanced horses threaten ...Nxc2+ and a royal fork!) Nbc6.
Beautifully simple and simply beautiful, but I did not see it. Sad

Only if white castles as well, no?
10. ... 0-0
11. Bxb4 Qxe2+ (or Nxe2)
12. Qxe2 Nxe2 (or Qxe2+)
13. Kxe2

And all I got is my king's castled and his is exposed, the material's even. I believe - I felt even as it played out - that there must have been a better way to play the situation but I don't think this is it.

He just completely overlooked that I'd freed my bishop the move before, somehow. (I know this because I asked him.)

I know, but figured I had reason to hope that

and thought there was in this case nothing lost with testing the hypothesis - I could still switch to a long drawn out advance-pawns-and-trade-the-queens-at-some-point endgame if he freed his King (or moved the Queen to the baseline, yet another way to escape.)

http://gameknot.com/chess.pl?bd=20416126 is homely vs oakvale; a person vs bore seems not to be up yet.

That's a good result for Anand in game 1 of the FIDE World Chess Championship.  He transposed into a Grünfeld and then equalized easily.
And then Carlson thought for twenty minutes and found and decided on a queen move that basically forced a draw (well, gave Anand the choice of taking an instant draw or losing materiel.)

In other news, I've given up vs anvi.

Carlsen wins again, again in a complicated one-rook-and-many-pawns endgame. Guess it's the end of an era coming up.

Now that the Rook has been tempted off the back rank by the wayward Black Bishop, a variation of the mating motif above still works. But Black doesn't quite spot it.
I did, at that point in the match's progress. Smiley

And he'll just time out again if the time control remains set to two days? Tongue

I'm all for restarting the game off the record with a different time control; I still have embarassing mistakes in my first game vs Oakvale back in june to atone for. How's that Oak?

EDIT after reading the other thread: Or we could restart the game after you get your internet connection fixed, of course.

Sorry about all that, guys. I'd be more than happy to restart the game if that's okay with you, Lewis. Smiley

It's not an FC game, so unfortunately I don't feel obligated.  But the capsule version would be that there were some exciting tactics from both sides, and a number of errors on both sides, and of the errors, Black made the last ones.  Tongue
Yes, I kinda got that much from a brief lookover and the vibe of the preceding posts. Tongue

Svidler was, actually, a wildcard selection. Only the other seven people actually qualified for this.

The game between me and Oakvale has ended. (I had this post reply window open for the past hour!)
