Said he made up his mind months ago, citing the need for Iowa to keep some seniority.

Disappointing for me, although there's still plenty of time for him to change his mind.

He'll be 89 in 2022.  This will almost definitely be his last term.

I guess this is good since it puts back a pickup opportunity for democrats and reserves a seat for republicans, but at the same time I'm very disappointed. I would love to get some new blood in the Senate.

But still, I would rather have him then a Richard Muordock that would lose an open seat.

Iowa is purple Presidential and with who they send to congress Iowa is evenly split. What's with the accepted consensus that Grassley couldn't possibly be taken down?

Any "New Blood" Iowa gets when Grassley retires is most likely going to be a Democrat. The only decent candidate that the Iowa GOP has is Tom Latham, and if he wanted to be in the Senate he'd be running against Braley right now.

Because he hasn't had a close election since Carter was in office, and hasn't done anything to piss off the state of Iowa enough to throw him out.

I wouldn't take it to the bank yet. If Democrats continue to control the senate after 2014 then he might call it quits.
Also, if a strong challenger comes forth and there are a couple of polls that show a close race then he might follow Jay Rockefeller's steps because I doubt that he will have the appetite for a vigorous campaign at his 80s.

I won't believe him unless he's still saying this in the spring of 2014. Remember Pete Domenici?

the dems still need to put up a legit challenger to Grassley. Sometimes an old incumbent has trouble running a campaign for the first time (ie Milton Young close call in 1974, Warren Magnuson loss in 1980)

All good points. Hope is not entirely lost.

To hang around to be in minority. The tea partiers in 2016 are most likely to lose like Johnson and we still will add seats though.
