After 9 years of minority governments, Canadians finally elected a majority government in 1949, electing the Liberal-Progressive Conservative Coalition to a majority, winning 140 seats in the 262 seat legislature. The majority was won in Quebec, which had been the domain of the Bloc populaire the previous two elections. The coalition also won a majority of seats in Ontario, and all but seat in Atlantic Canada. The CCF once again would form the opposition, winning 82 seats. The CCF did well in Ontario, where they won 34 seats, and also won every seat in BC, all but one in Saskatchewan and a majority in Manitoba. They won no seats in Alberta, where Social Credit won all of their 17 seats. The Communists won 8 seats, 4 of which were in Ontario. They kept Cartier in Quebec, even without Fred Rose on the ballot.

In 1950, the Coalition agreed to support the UN effort in the Korean War. The coalition was united by their opposition to communism, and willingly agreed to send a volunteer army onto the peninsula, despite Prime Minister Power's past dovish views. The Communists vehemently opposed the war, for obvious reasons.

Domestically, the coalition devoted much of Canada's post war surplus to paying off war time debts, but also to provide new social programs, such as family allowances, old age pensions, government funding of university and post-secondary education and an early form of Medicare termed Hospital Insurance. Much of this was done in hopes to keep the opposition CCF at bay.

However, the coalition began to see significant cleavages during their majority. Many Liberal Quebec MPs clashed with Anglo Tory MPs from outside of Quebec, which made keeping the coalition together very difficult for Power and Fleming. The Tories were also disappointed at not getting a chance at being a the senior coalition partner. For this reason, the coalition opted to change the electoral system to elect MPs based on preferential vote (like in Australia). That way, both parties could run against eachother without the threat of vote splitting. Both parties agreed that if they together won a majority of seats in the upcoming election, they would continue governing as a coalition.

The CCF and the minor parties opposed these "reforms", knowing they were created to prevent them from gaining power.

Parties:

Liberals

Leader: Prime Minister Charles Gavan "Chubby" Power, MP for Quebec South

The Liberals are the senior party in the coalition. They are promising a steady as she goes policy, promising a continuation of using Canada's surplus to support Canada's social safety net if the country can afford it.

Progressive Conservatives

Leader: Donald Fleming, MP for Eglinton, ON

The Tories are running mostly on the need to have sound fiscal managers in government, and to continue to pay off Canada's debt and that comes before any social spending.

C.C.F.

Leader: M.J. Coldwell, MP for Rosetown-Biggar, SK

The Socialist CCF continues to remain moderate under the leadership of Coldwell, but are suggesting the coalition's social programs have not gone far enough to address Canada's problems (such as the need for universal health care). The party is also running on repealing the preferential ballot.

Social Credit

Leader: Solon Earl Low, MP for Peace River, AB

The SoCreds are now running 71 candidates. They are continuing to run on a social conservative platform, and are running on an anti-communist "red baiting" platform. It should be noted that the SoCred offshoot in Quebec- the Union of Electors won no seats in 1949, and have dissolved. Social Credit is not running any seats in Quebec.

Communists

Leader: Tim Buck, MP for Trinity, ON

The Communists have been rejuvenated after purging the party of Soviet spies and influence. They have also been buoyed by an opposition to the Korean War and Canada's influence in the Cold War in general. They are running 100 candidates.

So, there you have it please vote based on your primary preference. Based on the results, I will simulate a preferential ballot in ridings where a candidate fails to get 50% of the vote. It should be obvious that most Tory votes will go to the Liberals and vise versa. CCF votes will be fairly evenly distributed (mostly to the Liberals and Communists) . Social Credit will be fairly even as well, with few going to the Communists. Communist preferences will mostly go to the CCF.  Feel free to state your preferences in this thread as well, and I will factor them in how preferences will flow.

Poll will be open for 4 days.

Man, this is hard. I support preferential voting, but overall I'm still a CCF voter. I might switch to the Liberals to keep the more proportional voting system, but I'm not sure yet.

Might vote for CCF based on their UHC stance. How open are the Liberals to UHC and what is the CCF's view on the Cold War?
