     Apparently he also acted as a priest after resigning his post as such. It seems that his offenses went beyond being daring on some hot-button social issues.

The priest in question was excommunicated after (among other things) performing unofficial marriages and saying mass after being defrocked. This is a church discipline issue sparked by the priests heretical views, not an issue of the priest's views themselves.
