So yeah. While rumors had abounded that Clinton, re-elected in a record landslide in 1808, might allow his supporters to nominate him for a third term, his death in April of 1812 quickly put a stop to that. On April 20th, 1812, George Clinton became the first American President to die in office. While debate began as to whether the Vice President could become President or merely Acting President upon his superior's death, Adams and his cabinet quickly put a stop to that. Having been in office mere weeks, the parties are beginning to select nominees, largely through caucuses comprised of their congressional representatives. Who will you choose, and for what party?
