I would think one would start with authoritative, and depending on the kid, segue over time to something more permissive. That is the way my Dad did it. Basically at 16, he unleashed me entirely. He just trusted me I guess not to crash and burn.

Permissive - with a focus on being loving, supportive, and an enabler of self-improvement.

Authoritative, but closer to permissive than authoritarian.

Authoritative, segue to permissive. Besides high grades and staying out of trouble, I'd be keen on giving them responsibility early on. As others have said, responsive, not controlling, supportive of self-improvement. Not too many rules either, with proportionate punishment for getting into trouble, failing expectations or disrespect. Speaking of which, I'm with Sanchez on language. Would want to be involved in their lives early on and then draw back as required. If necessary say "you'll thank me later" on certain things - based on my own personal experience.

encourage literacy and critical thinking skills.  I have very little emotional intelligence / common sense myself so I'd just hope for the best on those fronts.
