I would go as high as possible on most all such substances were the threat of increasing smuggling not a substantial concern at a certain point. Up to that point, I probably wouldn't have any complaints.

Unfortunately it has been a good five years or so since I took that elective course on criminology, which included a review of most drugs, which is probably why I didn't pick up on the fact that you were talking about substances that are still illegal.

I am in full agreement, and I don't think I get why one is being marked out and not the other.

I am in full disagreement because I think one's freedom ends where your decisions (especially irresponsbile decisions, which is how I would regard smoking of any form) effects someone else and thus there is a perfectly good arguement from a standpoint of preserving freedom, to side with the non-smokers in terms of the regulating of the public space one way or the other. I view it no different then I would clean water or clean air legislation, which is preserving the right of the masses to have access to the necessities of life without having to absorb Dow's wastes.

I oppose the amendment though, because it creates a senseless double standard. Smoke is smoke at the end of the day and a smoking ban that doesn't apply to both just screams of an indefensible personal bias (I concede that I am fully biased against all forms of smoking, but I think that my endorsement of a smoking ban is justifiable on the grounds stated above).

I generally approve of public smoking bans because I feel that other people's freedom from smoke is more important than your freedom to smoke. The reason I just scored out tobacco was because I am aware of the dangers of secondhand tobacco smoke in terms of cancer, in a way I'm not for cannabis. Having said that I wouldn't mind allowing regions to ban smoking that in public, if it became clear that was a public health issue as well.

At the end of the day smoke inhalation is unhealthy regardless of what is being burned. Smoke is the by product of the combustion of some flamable solid substance. When its burned you get the smoke composed of carbon dioxide as well as other gases and mixed into that is solid particulate matter derived from the substance in question. At the very least the particulate matter and its impact on the lining of the lungs, as well as the inhaling of unnatural (carbon dioxide for one, which is supposed to be exhaled not inhaled) gaseous substances which has the same displacement effect vis a vis oxygen (which in turn forces the cardiovascular system to work double time to compensate. Think of a delivery truck delivering the a certain percentage of the wrong shipment, in a demand side system. The truck gets worn out quicker. That is why heart disease is a more common killer for smokers then cancer), regardless of what that substance the combustion of which the smoke is derived. To be or not to be carcinogen risk really is only one of the considerations and the revelation that it has a lower cancer risk has served to create a false perception that it is safe from all potential health concerns.
