Currently, neither side has a monopoly on blame. The Republicans start out in a hole, but the Democratic non-negotiation position probably is not that popular either (NOTE: I fully know Reid caved in September, but the vast majority of the American population ends.

So, which side comes out less battered, and will this affect the 2014 elections at all? If Boehner caves, could Democrats stage a wave election while establishment republicans and tea-party activists set up a circular firing squad? Would the reverse happen if the Democrats cave? And might the "intransigent" position of Democrats hurt them?

I think that this whole shutdown is basically a prelude to what is going to happen in the 2014 election season. Neither side wants to lose enthusiasm, and both sides want a massive PR break.

Why are Democrats getting sh**t for not negotiating? They agreed to the $988 billion amount that Boehner wanted, rather than a higher amount they wanted. Boehner in term promised to pass a clean CR, which he reneged on. Democrats should play hardball and take $988 billion off the table.

I think the GOP will lose this one but not nearly as badly as some are predicting.

Exactly. Most people I know seem to think:
-The Republicans are to blame,
-The Democrats are being almost as bad as them for not negotiating for spending cuts.

Obviously it's a dumb position, but since most people have the mentality that Washington is broken, both parties are equally partisan, etc., it makes sense. The pubbies will still probably pay at the ballot box though.

You know this and I know this, but the only important question is: do the American people know this?

Make no mistake about it: The shutdown is entirely the fault of the Republicans. Every last bit of it.

Just like all the rest of the shutdowns since 1981.

Obama certainly deserves some blame for his past caves that encouraged this. I blame both parties, but for opposite reasons.

Republicans will lose badly on this, but thanks to gerrymandering somehow not actually lose anything.

I think, as in '95-'96, Dems will look better nationally, but, as King notes, House Pubs who favored the shutdown who are also in safe districts will look like heroes to their constituencies.
