The Simpsons is one of the most important TV shows in history, Family Guy is a funny show with decent gags, but hardly special.

Is this really how for we've sunk? Family Guy in contention with The Simpsons?

Family Guy, though I absolutely respect The Simpsons and acknowledge that, without that show, Family Guy along with many other quality television shows would not exist.

The Simpsons. Say what you will about the show, but every episode does have a pretty good message. I like it.

No. As I've said before, they're both majority bad at this point but The Simpsons has a vastly greater volume of both good and bad material and its good material had an incalculably greater impact on television and popular culture in general.

Family Guy, only because its funnier. The Simpsons does have a much better background and story than Family Guy though.

Just no. And early Simpsons (easily) eclipses King of the Hill (though KOTH is better than most).

The best thing about KotH is that it was more realistic than any cartoon and most live action comedies and still managed to work in plenty of jokes.

They're both horrible, but I vote for The Simpsons, because although the producers admit it has a left-wing bias, it's nowhere near as overt about it as Family Guy.

Here's an example of a really funny Simpsons joke from the classic era: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIpLd0WQKCY

But Family Guy has something that funny almost every episode. In fact that's a very Family Guy-esque gag, it's just if Family Guy did it it would have nothing to do with the plot and instead would be someone saying "Oh this is just like that time Peter tried to buy a gun" and then had that clip.

Also Family Guy has much better songs: http://www.hulu.com/watch/5547 (That would make a great ringtone)

That leaves out the best joke from that bit.

Blasphemy!  While there are a few gems in Season 9, the "classic era" ends with Season 8.  Wink
