NEOS has elected a new party leader for Vorarlberg, which will hold state elections in September.

Sabine Scheffknecht (35 years, she'll be their frontrunner in the state elections too)

http://neos.eu/vorarlberg

NEOS prime goal is to break the absolute majority of the ÖVP in Vorarlberg.

They have a good chance to do so, because of a few factors:

* The ÖVP's long term governor retired about a year ago and a new candidate took over. He's not unpopular there I guess, but the popularity of the former governor certainly helped the ÖVP win more than 50% again in 2009.

* NEOS had their best state result in Vorarlberg in the federal election last year. Austrian NEOS-leader Matthias Strolz is from Vorarlberg and could play an important support role in the campaign.

* Team Stronach is not running, which means more voters "available" for NEOS.

FPÖ does 5% better here than in the EU elections poll ...

Direct vote for Chancellor:

"Do you have a positive or negative impression of the work these party leaders are doing ?"

Elections for the Arbeiterkammer/AK (=Workers´Chambers) took place (with AK-LowerAustria coming in May) and saw an increased dominance of FSG(=SPÖ), losses for FCG-ÖAAB(=ÖVP) and moderate gains for FA(=FPÖ) and AUGE(=Greens). FCG held their 2 Länder (Tyrol & Vorarlberg), the FSG the other 6.
The SPÖ gained ~2% in Salzburg&Burgenland&Vienna, performed strongly in Carinthia (+10)and UpperA. (+6), but lost 8% in Styria, where the FPÖ added 7% (loosing 6% in Carinthia and 3,3% in Vienna).
The ÖVP-list gained 1% in their traditional stronghold Tyrol (64%) and lost everywhere else: -1 in Carinthia&Vorarlberg, -3 in Styria, -4 in Vienna, -5 in Salzburg&Burgenland, -8,3 in UpperA.

Just to add an important thing that our English-speaking/etc. posters might not understand:

The AK-vote (Worker's Chamber) is the big Union vote that takes place every 5 years.

About 1/3 Austrian employees and workers are unionized.

The FSG (Fraction of Socialist Unionists) did rather well, especially in Carinthia it seems.

The FCG (Fraction of Christian Unionists) held their 2 Western states.

The FA (Freedomite Workers Union) performed rather poorly, except in Styria - which might see a sharp turn towards the FPÖ in next years state election there.

No, the AK is exactly not the Union ("Österreichischer Gewerkschaftsbund/ÖGB") with its facultative membership; the AK represents all employees, with a mandatory membership.
The ÖGB is further more SPÖ-dominated (FSG-majorities also in ÖGB-Tyrol&Vorarlberg).

Yes, I have phrased it badly. The correct definition is like this:

A big white swastika on a Carinthian castle is creating some controversy lately:

http://kaernten.orf.at/news/stories/2641810

The swastika is about 80 years old and not really painted on the outside of the castle and clearly visible, but rather "engraved" (don't know the English term for it) in the stones.

The Mauthausen committee has already long ago said that the swastika needs to be removed, but the owner of the castle (who said he's completely opposed to Nazi ideology) says it's too dangerous to renovate the castle, because the whole building could crash down if workers use drilling machines to remove it.

Now this thing will probably remain up there. The owner is also opposed to creating a historic monument like the Federal Monument Protection Agency prefers it, because he doesn't want "pilgrims from either the far-right, nor the far-left".

It's totally legitimate that an umbrella organisation of Holocaust survivors in that KZ call for the removal of Nazi symbols in public space.

How is that "close minded" ?

This is great: PULS 4 channel yesterday had a debate with FPÖ-leader Strache and many black guests in the audience about the use of "negro/n" in the public (Thilo Sarrazin was also present in the debate).

Strache: "I know a lot of black people who don't mind being called "Neger".

Black audience members: "We do mind being called that."

Strache: "I'm not the speech police."

And so on ...

A must see debate.

The Easter poll for the "Standard" by Market shows how many Austrians believe in each part of the Christian Confession of Faith:

From top to bottom:

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead & on the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Accordingly, no damage by the forced resignation of Mölzer. The FPÖ voter base seems fairly good resistant. Wink

Finance Minister Michael Spindelegger (ÖVP) will hold his first "Budget Speech" next Tuesday, in which he'll present the budgets for 2014 and 2015 (the 2014 one now instead of last year, because of the federal election last fall).

Some facts: The budget deficit last year was 1.5% of GDP and debt was 74.5%

This year, the massive-fail HYPO bank will be winded down in a bad bank. This will increase the deficit to 2.7% this year and the debt will rise to 79.2% of GDP. This is only temporarily, because the remaining HYPO assets will be sold, which means the state debt will come down again in the next years.

Spindelegger has said that he'll enforce a rigorous saving regime in the next years, which means a "planned balanced budget" by 2016 and debt down to around 70% of GDP by the end of the legislative term in 2018.

The 2014/15 budgets have been presented today and the figures are:

2013 (actual numbers): 1.5% deficit, 74.5% debt

2014 (planned): 2.7% deficit, 79.2% debt
2015 (planned): 1.4% deficit, 77.6% debt

2016 (budget forecast): 0.7% deficit, 75.6% debt
2017 (budget forecast): 0.6% deficit, 73.4% debt
2018 (budget forecast): 0.5% deficit, 71.5% debt

...

If these numbers turn out to be true, it would take 3 years to absorb the 20 Bio. € that the HYPO bank scandal cost the country.

Great detailed Austrian election results maps (down to the town level) for the last 3 federal elections:

2013:

http://www.strategieanalysen.at/wahlen/karten

2008:

http://www.strategieanalysen.at/wahlen/karten2008

2006:

http://www.strategieanalysen.at/wahlen/karten2006

...

These maps are awesome because it has a "moving tool", which allows you to see which party had at least 1% in which town, at least 2% in which town and so on.

For this you need to click on "Gemeinden/Partei" and move the button below the map to the right side.

Well, could be a local Carinthian thing.

Better anyway if the voters stick with the TS, rather than going back to the FPÖ ... Tongue

The picture with the two top candidates with guns in a James Bond kind of pose is really really really really sh**tty journalism. Horrible. Elections are not a game for fukc's sake.  Responsibles should be shot with a Walther PPK.

New IMAS poll for the Upper Austria state election (2015):

40% ÖVP (-7% compared with 2009 state election)
21% SPÖ (-4%)
18% FPÖ (+3%)
10% NEOS (+10%)
10% Greens (+1%)
 1% Others (-3%)

http://neuwal.com/wahlumfragen/wahlumfrage.php?uid=664

The current state-government is ÖVP-Greens (even though Upper Austria still has the Proporz-system, which means SPÖ and FPÖ also have some government members).

The Austrian Socialist Youth (SJ) has elected a woman as its leader for the first time in 120 years:

Julia Herr (21 years old), which means she's also the youngest leader ever.

The Socialist Youth is the much more leftist, activist and radical youth-organisation of the SPÖ, who wants the SPÖ to quit the Grand Coalition with the ÖVP.
