The date for the Vienna state election has been set today for October 11:

http://diepresse.com/home/panorama/wien/4669751/Wien-waehlt-am-11-Oktober

Burgenland votes on May 31, while the dates for Upper Austria and Styria are still unknown (but probably in September).

Communists (KPÖ) and Pirates will run under a joint list for the Vienna state elections (which are held either in June or in the fall).

They already did so last year in the EP elections, when it was called "Europa Anders" (A different Europe).

Now it is called "Wien Anders" (A different Vienna).

They got 4% in Vienna at the EP elections, but the threshold for the state elections will be 5%.

Will be pretty hard to get in.

The Vorarlberg municipal elections on March 15 could produce a stunning/shocking result in the city of Hohenems.

According to a new VN poll, the FPÖ and its mayoral candidate could for the first time win this ÖVP-dominated city.

3 points to note:

* The FPÖ's candidate for mayor there is Dieter Egger, who is also the state's FPÖ leader.
* The city of Hohenems has a long Jewish tradition and is the site of a Jewish museum
* During the 2009 state election campaign, Egger referred to the director of the Jewish Museum as an "exile Jew from America".

Anyway, here's the poll:

Yepp.

For the English-speakers: "emsig" in German means "diligent" and of course comes from Hohenems.

"The Greens & the diligent"

...

Also:

In the 2014 Vorarlberg state election, the FPÖ already won Hohenems slightly. But both the FPÖ and ÖVP lost compared with 2009.

35.3% FPÖ (2009: 38.0%)
34.6% ÖVP (39.8%)
16.8% Greens (8.6%)
  6.2% SPÖ (8.8%)
  5.4% NEOS (did not exist)
  1.8% Others

So are mayors elected directly, or are they elected in the same manner chancellors are?

Well, it depends.

In 6 of the 9 Austrian states, the mayors in each community are elected directly by the people.

In Vienna, Lower Austria and Styria the mayors in each community are elected by the newly elected city council.

Yesterday, there was a 2-hour "citizen forum" on the ORF about the Islamist terror threat in Europe and Austria and the cohabitation of non-muslim Austrians and muslims. Or broader: about integration matters.

You can watch it here:

http://tvthek.orf.at/program/Buergerforum/1343/Buergerforum-Angst-vor-dem-Terror-das-Ende-von-Multikulti/9293096

There was also a poll done for the ORF forum, by OGM (a good pollster):

"The cohabitation between non-muslims and muslims in Austria is ..."

27% Good
62% Not good

"There is a radicalisation of Muslims in Austria."

58% That's correct
30% That's overblown

"Are you afraid that terror attacks could happen here ?"

41% Yes
47% No

"Do you approve of the following measures to increase public security ?"

88% approve: revoke Austrian citizenship/passports of IS fighters
86% approve: temporary border controls
86% approve: more police presence on the streets or on highly frequented places
72% approve: more video surveillance
58% approve: increased surveillance of mosques
57% approve: data storage laws

Municipal elections in Carinthia on Sunday.

This will be the first real post-Jörg Haider municipal election.

I expect something like this statewide:

40% SPÖ
23% FPÖ
23% ÖVP
  7% Greens
  7% Others/Indies

Also interesting apart from the statewide result:

The Klagenfurt city council and mayoral election. The FPÖ-mayor almost definitely has to go into a runoff.

Turnout should drop back to around 70-72%, after reaching a high in the 2009 "Jörg Haider remembrance vote".

Carinthia (March 1)

2009 results (held on the same date as the "Jörg Haider remembrance vote" = 2009 state election):

36.7% SPÖ
33.1% FPÖ
20.4% ÖVP
  3.3% Greens
  6.6% Others/Indies

Turnout: 80.6%

Carinthia wouldn't be Carinthia without this story:

* The FPÖ-mayor in the town called Gurk (some almost 80-year old guy) was recently kicked out of the state/federal FPÖ (the expulsion came directly from FPÖ-leader Strache) for saying "I do only distance myself from what they [=> the Nazis] did, not from National Socialism itself".

* After the expulsion, the town-FPÖ reinstated him though as their mayoral candidate and he might as well be re-elected tomorrow.

First trends from Carinthia, based on the already counted small cities:

* SPÖ gains slightly, but will probably remain below 40% statewide
* FPÖ as expected drops by a lot from their 2009-BZÖ-share, but will likely remain above 20%
* ÖVP gains slightly, will get some 25% statewide
* Greens are expected to double their share, but from a low level
* Others/Indy lists are gaining by quite a bit

Turnout is not really bad in the already counted small towns (80-90%), but the bigger cities matter more and they will have lower turnout.

Map of already counted towns:

The count is almost done and the SPÖ might actually top 40% statewide after all.

The SPÖ won a huge victory in Villach (the 2nd biggest city), getting back the absolute majority there in the city council and their new mayoral candidate almost 60%.
