Interesting new YouGov poll:

"Should (insert state) secede from Germany and become independent ?"

32% Bayern
22% Thüringen
22% Saarland

(...)

8% each for Niedersachsen, Schleswig-Holstein & Rheinland-Pfalz

http://www.bild.de/politik/inland/bundesland/umfrage-bundeslaender-wollen-raus-aus-deutschland-52565436.bild.html

beautiful numbers. if frau merkel gets another term we could have independent bavaria. that would be great!

LOLno. From what I understand, the German constitution bans secession of a state from the mother (or father)land.
I saw no specific article banning it (and some can be open to interpretation whether they can support such move), but I guess it's a question of imminent vs. positive constitutionalism ala Schmitt v. Kelsen yet again

Doesn't seem to be an issue over here.

Yikes, those are actually really high numbers!

For reference around 25% of Basques or 42% of Catalans want independence. I wonder why there are no relevant "Bayern/Thuringen/Rheinland-Pfalz nationalist party" like here. They don't even need to be full on independence, just wanting more money and autonomy would be good enough

This really falls under "polling hypotheticals" so treat it with extreme caution. If any of these was  to become an actually salient question, then the numbers would change dramatically.

Eg the UK AV referendum, 60 odd % of people supported AV when it was some distant hypothetical idea, that dropped down to 30% when they actually held a referendum

^^ This.

Are the conservative parts of Berlin similar to the American working class vs. elite upscale tensions?

Which conservative parts? The blue conservative parts mainly consist of Trump conservatives, the black conservative parts mainly consist of Cruz conservatives, and the yellow conservative parts mainly consist of Forbes conservatives.

Where is the most conservative part of Germany located?

The most conservative part of Germany is Swabia in Eastern Baden-Württemberg and Western Bavaria. Its biggest cities are Ulm (BW) and Augsburg (BY).

Where is the most conservative part of Germany located?

The most conservative+populist right areas in Germany are in Bavaria, southern Baden-Württemberg, the state of Saxony and the area around Cloppenburg-Vechta in Lower Saxony (close to the border to the Netherlands). Those are all areas in which the CDU/CSU got more than 55% and/or in which the AfD did really well too.

The North-South divide from the days of the Confederation still exists(the former Prussian lands and Prussian allies vs. the areas of Austrian influence, Bavaria, Baden, Württemberg, and Saxony).

The yellow blob belongs to the very wealthy Grunewald district within the borough of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf.

Is the city of Berlin very liberal like most cities, or is it a rare conservative-leaning city?

The FDP gets very few votes (outside the incredibly rich bits of Berlin); like they do in every city in Germany.  So no, Berlin isn't "very Liberal".

Polls remain mostly unchanged.

But the recent INSA poll shows a drop for the Left from 10.5% to 9% over the past month (maybe because of the Hamburg-riots by left-leftist extremists ?) and the AfD gaining slightly to 10%.

Other/small parties are also up to 4.5% from 3%.

liberal in the American sense ≠ liberal in the European sense
Which is why people shouldn't use these terms in the American sense of the word when discussing European politics.

I've got to say; I find it fantastic that everytime an American uses "liberal" to mean left wing, a stream of European posters turn up and start yelling at them

We should just start using socialist, liberal, and conservative.  That's what's usually used if I'm not mistaken

Only if "socialist" is solely applied to Germany's Left Party. Because the SPD is social-democratic, not socialist. Tongue

Oh no, now that can of worms has been opened too ! Shocked

I think we should go by my totally objective criteria of "good guys", "bad guys" and "medium guys". Which, lets face it, is as totally legitimate as any other criteria

I doubt Merkel will seek a grand coalition again. It looks like she might go for a Jamaica Coalition

I think she'll only need the Greens.

Only officially. Merkel has never been a conservative. She only became a member of the CDU because Kohl was at the helm during Reunification.
Her political views bear much more resemblance to the Greens than to the FDP.

Huh ok that makes sense, but wouldn't the more conservative elements of the CDU/CSU want her to go with the FDP?
