Reagan, of course.

H. W. Bush is also a good candidate. It's painful to see everybody cite him as the Last Great moderate, pragmatic Republican, while he was by and large a conservative hack and bears a good deal of responsibility in the right-wing turn of American politics.

You guys realize George W Bush is more liked than Lyndon Johnson among Americans? Johnson is not "overrated".

FDR or Wilson. Teddy Roosevelt and Reagan don't fall far behind.

I chose Reagan, due to the unwavering adoration those on the right seem to give him. After him, I'd go with JFK. He could have been a great President (especially if he'd won a second term), but unfortunately we will never know what he could have become.

Reagan's rhetoric was very conservative, but he governed pretty moderately. A republican raising taxes six times is as pragmatic/moderate as it gets.
