Here's the background story on what's going on: http://www.theatlanticwire.com/politics/2013/10/house-gop-wont-stop-trying-hurt-their-staff-budget-deal/70560/

What's really interesting is some of the reactions from House Republicans' staffers (http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/newsdesk/2013/10/why-congressional-staffers-hate-the-vitter-amendement.html - comments from Democrats' staffers are in here as well, but it's probably obvious how they feel):

Hopefully some of these Republican staffers will become Democrats.

Because things are moving so fast, this is already out of date.  Boehner gave up on the House bill, because it didn't have enough votes to pass.  Whatever the Senate passes tomorrow (assuming they get their act together to pass something) will presumably not include the Vitter Amendment.  The House will then either pass the Senate bill, pass a short term clean debt ceiling increase (but no reopening of the government) to buy themselves some time, or pass nothing.  The Vitter Amendment appears to be dead.

But yeah, the fact that they were pushing this at one point isn't going to make their staffers happy.

I heard that he had given up after I posted this.  It's still relevant to the fact that the GOP politicians are pandering so far to the right that they're alienating the people who should, in theory, agree with them the most.

When someone with an E score of 9.61 thinks you're going to far to the right, you know you've gone batsh*t insane. Tongue

The whole episode has morphed into a meme, which I assume will get dirtier as it progresses.  Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

Sometimes I wonder if conservatives like Vitter hate even their own guts.

Staffers to Republican congressmembers should go on strike.

They literally are going off of a fairly typical plane of American political issues.
