So the shutdown is over. The deal passed the House with 87 Republicans voting in favor. That's more than a lot of people would have thought, but that still means almost two-thirds of Boehner's caucus are at least pretending to be upset over how this thing turned out. During this whole debacle everyone has been talking about how this would be the end of Boehner's speakership. So should we actually expect a leadership challenge in the near future, or will Republicans wait until after the 2014 midterms to try to replace Boehner?

I'm in an optimistic mood tonight, so I'll vote option 5.

I've expected Option 4 (Republicans will replace Boehner after the 2014 Midterms) for a while. I still think it is most likely.

No, even prominent defunders like Huelskamp and Labrador are very happy with him. Plus no one wants the job, and anyone who did wouldn't do much better.

Option 6. While possible, it's highly unlikely the Dems retake the House in 2014 and no one else wants the job right now.

The only way he's losing his job is if he retires or the Dems win back the House.

As long as the GOP holds the majority, he can last until his national favorability numbers tank so much that even the swing district members turn against him.

Republicans will replace Boehner after the midterms. Word has it that Boehner is going to step down after 2014 anyways so I don't see the proper motive for launching a risky and politically costly "coup" attempt. That and who would replace him? Cantor I guess. *shudders*

You forgot the option that says John Boehner won't be re-elected to his House seat in 2014.

Probably option 6, but I would like a replacement.

You mean the one where he got reelected to with 64%.  In 2006?

I suspect he'll voluntarily step down as Speaker.

I agree. I see him following in the footsteps of the three preceding Republican speakers (incl. Livingston, the almost-speaker) and deciding to ditch the Speakership and probably Congress altogether mid-term. He has the potential to earn a huge amount of money any time he wants to start.

Technically this has no bearing on any of the poll options because you don't have to be in Congress to be Speaker.

A loss from a primary challenge would be more likely than a loss in the general election, IMO. Not that either will happen.

At even odds, I'd certainly take the GOP.  Heck, even at a 3:2 payout it's pretty much a cinch bet ecept I really don't care to make shortshot bets.

The Dems have a chance of taking the House, but it's still very slim.

Option 4.  GOP will lose half a dozen or so seats and use it as an excuse to punish Boehner.
