At the request of Sen. Sam Spade, the following legislation written by Sen. Supersoulty is reintroduced:

Waste Reduction Resolution[/b]

Section 1

Immediately following the passage of this resolution, the Senate will appoint a select committee of Senators.

Section 2

The role of this new committee will be to identify 20 sources of wasteful spending on behalf of the Federal Government.

Section 3

The definition of wasteful spending will include, but not be limited to the following:

                   a) Outdated Domestic Contracts

                   b) Outdated Defense Contracts

                   c) Overlapping Departments or appropriations

                   d) Appropriations where less than 50% of the
                       appropriated monies are utilized

Section 4

The committee will report back to the full Senate their findings and recommendations, no later than one calendar month following the passage of this resolution.

Section 5

Per Section 4, the Senate will take a vote on a bill following the recommendations of the committee once those recommendations have been debated.

Section 6

The President Pro Temp of the Senate will have full appointment, removal and reappointment power over the committee.

I hereby open debate on this resolution.

While I like the overall message of this bill and the attempts at cost cutting and waste reduction matters it seems to me that we should be debating, voting and spending our time on more valuable things. Electoral Reform, Tax Reform, a working Budget along with a bill or amendment stating the particulars of budgeting, and the creation of a Criminal Code. While this is a nice piece of legislation creating a commission of Senators will heavily impact our ability to bring much needed bills and amendments before the 6th Senate.

As there would only be something like three senators working on this, it seems to me that it would not preclude doing something else.

I see no reason why three senators can't work on this at the same time, combined with normal Senatorial affairs.

After all, I would hope that one of the main goals of this Senate, once we get through all of this old legislation, is to finally come up with a federal budget once and for all.  This will go in line with that process.

So, I'm bumping this up to see if any other Senators have comments on this or else I'm going to request a motion to bring a vote on this.

I would like to ask the President Pro-Temp to please associate my name with the legislation.  Not that I want gable up all the credit or anything, but when election time comes, it might help to be able to prove that this was my resolution.  Smiley

Er... I'm not sure how I'd formally do that, but okay, your name is now officially associated with this legislation.

All senators in favor, vote "aye"; all against, vote "nay".

I'll count the two votes already logged.

This legislation now has enough votes to pass; senators now have twenty-four hours to change their votes.

Whoa, whoops.  I guess this thing got kinda buried.  Mea culpa.  Sorry about that.

With eight votes in favor to none against, I hereby declare this resolution to have passed.

It has been almost two Atlasian years since this bill was passed.  Almost twice as long as the bill resolution proposes.  Given our budget crisis, I don't believe this should be taken lightly.

What, if anything, has been accomplished by the comittee?

I appointed Sam Spade, Colin Wixted, and Nym90 to this committee, but it appears that they have forgotten about it (and that Nym has retired).
