"Village" being the term because that's how the state of Wisconsin decided to incorporate it. Nothing notable it other than it being a fairly redneck place, when I stopped at a gas station there was hordes of hunting magazines for sale, but that's kind of expected in this area even for towns that notable.

But something I looked up and was interested in. Not every day you find such a place, so always interesting.

Where was this? There are plenty of rural, toss-up areas in Wisconsin.

I know several state legally use the term "village," but it's still stupid. A village is a small pre-industrial settlement, not a suburban town.

Guess. Smiley It's not too hard to look up considering it was obviously near the border near the Twin Cities.

Well Minnesota and North Dakota call every incorporated settlement a "city", therefore you have "cities" with a population of like 60. Wisconsin does differentiate, but can't use the term "town", because they use "town" as a shorthand for "township". Hence use of the term "village". Please note these designations were probably written and made up a long time ago.

For the record I have no problem with the Minnesota/North Dakota system on this, as in terms of incorporation size isn't that important and there's not much need for different categories. An incorporated municipality is an incorporated municipality.

Since 1961 IL has used village and city to distinguish the type of government, not the size. A village has 6 trustees and a president all elected at large. A city has a mayor and aldermen by ward if it a mayor-council form of government or a mayor and councilmen if it a managerial form of government. Each form gives different powers to the officials.
