In 1976, instead of nominating former Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter, the Democrats nominate Alabama Governor George Wallace and Idaho Senator Frank Church for vice-president.  The Republicans nominate Gerald Ford and Bob Dole.  Who wins?

Ford/Dole

While Carter would have held onto the south, it's hard to imagine some of the northern industrial states that went for Carter voting for Wallace.

Actually Wallace was popular in the industrial midwest.

Wallace's views might help in the midwest but would still scare away middle America....

I think that was more in the early 80's.

It wasn't really a trasformation... more him reverting to type (back in the '50's he was the most liberal judge in Alabama, not much of an accolade but... and he ran for Governer of Alabama in '58 on an integrationist platform. He got mauled in the primary by a KKK backed candidate, decided that he wasn't going to be "out n*ggered" by anyone and the rest is history...) I suspect if he thought he had a realistic chance of becoming President it would have happend earlier.
