Just something I've been realizing lately, you can find plenty of really f[inks]ing stupid braindread "commentary" on sites like DU (NOT DailyKos I must emphasize, which tends to be a very analytical and well thought out site in its commentary, even if occasionally hackish), but you usually don't see that type of junk reflected on major news sites. On the other hand at least half of comments on any political article will typically be barely coherent and poorly spelled ramblings about the evils of Muslim, socialist Obama. And even during the Bush years during such stories that reflected poorly on the administration you never saw whole pages of "OMG BUSH = HITLER!!!1!!" junk over and over. It seems the illiterate Tea Party crazies love to spread their crap all over the internet yet the not too bright left wingers usually just stick to their own little caves.

Self identified conservatives greatly outnumber self identified liberals. And there isn't much of a left in American politics. The great liberal victory is a Heritage Foundation plan where everybody is required to buy private health insurance. Seriously?

It depends on what sites you see. I see a lot more liberal morons on YouTube. I think your bias is getting in the way of seeing both sides. Most of the time, I see a fair amount from both sides. But that's just me, apparently on here we're supposed to be convinced that the democratic party is less crazy in every way than the republican party, and if you disagree, then you're just crazy yourself.

Because there are more? Tongue /leftwinghack

Seriously, I dunno. Maybe left-wing morons are less likely to access mass media?

I'll guess there's an age gap at work. Conservatives trend toward old age, but old people also especially recognize the brand power of major news outlets. Hence they limit news gathering to those sites and a subset of them comment.

Younger people have no sentimental ties to major news outlets. A more flexible stream of information are sites like Facebook, Youtube or Reddit, and they read news via clickthroughs. It's not that left-wingers aren't necessarily discussing mass news less, but that they do so in separated communities like Facebook friend networks, subreddits or forums like this.

Because right wing morons are just starting to understand social media. Liberals run blogs, conservatives go comment on Yahoo! articles. Circle of life.

Ehh... What sites are you going on? I know for example, if I go read articles on the Globe & Mail's website, half the comments are STEVE HARPUR ISA FASHIST!!!

Steve Harpur?  Who the hell is Steve Harpur?  Sounds like a fashion designer.

Like someone else said it's all about news cultures.  I mean, I have no idea what BRTD is talking about here/have no reference because I NEVER look at the comments section of a mass media site.  I mean, what the hell do people expect?  "Look, I respectfully disagree.  I'm a political conservative from South Carolina and you are a liberal from Massachusetts.  I'll pretend there is no cultural war here and that it is ingrained in our society for us to not only judge people entirely on what they believe and where they are from, and just take this argument on it's merits.
Anyway, I don't believe that the profits losses generated by denying building of oil pipeline EZ2 is worth the supposed "environmental savings" we will get.  I do believe in environmental safety and conservation, but the world isn't going to die if we build this pipeline.  This is why the administration is wrong.  Obama is a good and nice guy, I like his teeth.  I bet he makes a killer brisket.  However, he is just wrong on this matter, like he is on many."
Hell no.
The way "mass media" has gotten to where it's been is by allowing political oppositions to resort to extreme intellectual dishonesty that has brought about a system by where there is no real interest in pursuing a coherent and rational debate.  Or for people to come onto new sites with what we would call "effort posts".  Rather, the typical site with comments on it is just a means for people to voice their three minutes of hate.  And using proper punctuation, capitalization, and other expected grammar rules takes too much time.  Add to the fact that the advance of technology has made it to where any yahoo with a 3G (or whatever the hell we have now) connection to gain access to the web and type out their thoughts.  And this may shock some of you, but there are a lot of people who don't know basic things like spelling.  I think the real question here is why American education has failed us so much that you can't go onto popular media sites without running into somebody ranting about "POLITIKUL DISFUNKSHUN."

Rant over.

There's really no point in doing that in places where there is no sense of community - there's no reward. As tends to be the case wherever you can only comment on what the powers that be upload.

Yahoo News, or any major American news network or newspaper. You'd expect this from Fox News, but really CNN isn't much better, the only real difference is on Fox EVERYTHING is Obama's fault even if the article had nothing to do with him. For example an article about say, a children's toy being recalled due to safety concerns' comments would mostly be "BLAH BLAH BLAH THIS IS OBAMA'S AMERICA! BLAH BLAH BLAH OBAMA WANTS TO KILL YOUR KIDS"

Because conservatives can afford to sit in front of their computers all day while soaking up the taxpayer's dollar, whereas hard-working liberals have to go out and earn a living.

Because there is already a difference between being left-wing moderate and right-wing moderate. You are already half a moron if you are a right-wing moderate (provided you don't earn $4 million a month), so you are more likely to be a complete all out moron if you are a right-wing radical. Whereas if you are a left-wing moderate you are a safe and sound person, and you only venture into shallow waters of moronness if you get radical.

Hence, you are more likely to express your views shouting them to the world if you are at complete all out moron level, because once again : les cons ça ose tout, c'est même à ça qu'on les reconnaît.

I know that on Swedish youtube clips, comments such as "Hitler was right, we should kill all black people" will be top rated comments while "I think people of all colours can live in harmony" will be like -20.

I always found it a bit odd.

You really haven't thought this through have you?

Anyway... It can also be a matter of perspective. Many left wing comments that you read may not seem unreasonable or silly to you, since you are likely to, at least partially share the views of the left wing commentators. However, to someone on the right those comments may indeed seem ridiculous.

I was being entirely subjective, yes. I'll maintain nonetheless.

Something I have noticed is that the irrational left wing loons generally keep to their own politically-oriented sites while irrational right wing loons tend to be more aggressive with their politics.

There are more conservatives than liberals, and liberals don't sound as crazy to you. There are probably other factors as well, but I think those are the main ones.

The comments on George Will's columns at the WashPo always seem to consist overwhelmingly of left-wingers who maybe understood two words of the article if they read it at all.

Much more of the left self-segregates and comments on things in an ideologically like-minded community, I think. Reddit or this forum, for example.

Simple.  Right-wingers tend to occupy the middle of the intelligence spectrum while left-wingers occupy the lowest and the highest (at least Democratic voters as a whole; many of the less intelligent Democrats don't understand liberal vs. conservative).  However, the lower-middle end, in which many of these comments are from, is generally more conservative (note that Atlas, both left and right, is at the upper end of intelligence).
