I get the point behind this bill, I do, but I'm uncomfortable handing our foreign policy over to the UN, especially given how some members can be corrupted at times. We need to be flexible.

I do favor a gradual reduction in our military footprint abroad, but this is too much at one time and would likely have a detrimental impact not only on our relations abroad, but domestically as well.

I think a redraft of this on a more scaled basis would probably be acceptable to Senator TNF. It would certainly be so for me.

I switched my vote to Nay - While I can get behind clause 1 and 3, I don't think it would be wise to place such an important decision in the hands of the United Nations.

Whether this reached Nix's desk or Duke's, I hope a redraft addressing this problem will be made!

We could go the redraft route. I want to make it clear I do support the intentions behind this bill, but in a much more gradual/scaled manner (sorry TNF Tongue )

Also, the UN bit has to go, as we have seen how money can influence others to sometimes not vote the correct way. I don't want strings attached to our nation's decision making. That may sound arrogant, but I am arrogant, so there. Tongue

The UN vote would be a necessary but not sufficient cause for giving aid. But yeah, I agree that it's not perfect, and I don't like how one country could stop us intervening in a Kosovo like situation. Perhaps something like a UN resolution or a supermajority?

Generally, we want the UN to back us because it gives us legitimacy. I am not sure how to make their approval a sufficient condition without selling out our security to other countries. I don't know any other superpower on this planet that has a foreign policy such as that one.

If you or someone else can work that out, be my guest, but I am far too uncomfortable giving the UN that kind of power over our sovereignty to sign a bill as it currently stands.

The rest of it can be worked out so it won't have such a sudden impact on both our economy and foreign footprint all at once. The goal can be accomplished, but we need to tread lightly and roll them back slowly.

This has six ayes as well, MAtt you can call 24 hours on vote changes.

Be carefull not to double count the PAcific and Mideast, they each get one vote and if the successor's differs, it replaces the predecessor's vote.

I will offer a redraft on this bill. I can't sign it with the UN provision still present, as I am not comfortable with giving the security council so much power over our foreign policy.

Do we have a final text on this?
