A lot of people have said politics is polarizing on a psychological basis (see Jonathan Haidt). Is it possible that liberals (sans minorities) become the docile party while conservatives become the rambunctious party?

No, I think the "liberal/conservative" divide (when controlling for the racial divide) is based more on level of education and exposure/lack of exposure  to a diverse number of cultures .

This makes educated white liberals (and some educated conservatives) seem "politically correct" and less educated white "conservatives" (right-leaning populists) and some less educated "liberals" (better described as left-leaning populists) seem more politically and culturally crass.
